SO I have to be honest . . . At first I was super excited to hear about this product, but then I was nervous.

As someone who deals with chronic pain this product had big shoes to fill. There’s NO way I could recommend this product to my spoonie friends and clients unless I knew that it was really going to help.

I scroll through my newsfeed too many times seeing those stupid “It Works” ads about this product really working or seeing how Beachboy Shakeology will cure-all your fatigue problems.

I’m not doubting that it works for some people, but come on… People can get out of control with their claims. Therefore, before I make any claims about this product, I really wanted to dive deep into it!


The brand name Deep Blue® is synonymous with relief for sore and tired muscles. The CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oil blend as well as the rub have provided comfort to many and are trusted among their users. It only makes sense that an ingestible supplement would complement the topical benefits of the Deep Blue product line. Yeah, yeah, yeah… That all sounds great and good, BUT…

What can these ingredients do for me and my Spoonie family? (That’s truly the question I ask myself on most things.) There are so many products out there for joint pain and so many people tout that theirs is the best. So where does this stack up? How will taking these ingredients every day help me?

I spent time going back and forth with the customer service to really understand how these ingredients are working. Sure, I’m a dōTERRA wellness advocate. Sure, I can sell you this product. BUT joint pain is a subject near and dear to my heart, so I needed to do my research!!

frankincense1Frankincense –

The health benefits of Frankincense can be attributed to its properties as an antiseptic, disinfectant, astringent, carminative, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, digestive, diuretic, emenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic, uterine and vulnerary substance. So how would Frankincense help me and my chronically fabulous friends?

Well! Renowned as one of the most prized and precious essential oils, Frankincense has extraordinary internal and external health benefits. In addition to its notoriety in the New Testament, the Babylonians and Assyrians would burn Frankincense in religious ceremonies and the ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to salves for soothing skin. This centuries-old knowledge contributes to the modern uses of Frankincense today. As the king of oils, Frankincense is known to promote cellular health and immunity and can be consumed daily for these internal benefits. It also promotes a healthy inflammatory response and acts as an overall tonic to the body’s systems, helping them function optimally.

My final thought – Cellular health, immunity and a healthy inflammatory response. All 3 positive checks to me!

TurmericCurcumin –

Curcumin is a GREAT GREAT GREAT supplement in my book. I didn’t start taking it until my health coach recommended it to me about a year and a half ago. It takes about a month of constant use to kick in, but once you start noticing the benefits of curcumin, you KNOW when you don’t take it. I experience less joint pain and swelling, I have a better overall feeling and have more energy. Wanna know more? Check out: 6 Health Benefits of Curcumin

One of my main questions was why there was not bio-prine or black pepper in the supplement since this helps the absorption of curcumin! Well, the answer to that question surprised me! The compound piperine that is found in Black Pepper (that has been found to increase the bioavailability of curcumin from turmeric) is non-volatile so therefore not in the essential oil of black pepper. This is why the Black Pepper essential oil is not included. Piperine was considered in this product. However, our research led to serious concerns of piperine’s effects on metabolic functions within the liver. If you take a look at the Supplement Facts, specifically with the curcumin, it states BCM95, which is what doTERRA has decided to use to increase the bioavailability of curcumin. They assured me that doTERRA uses only the most bioavailable and absorbable forms of nutrients in our supplements.

My final thought – I already think curcumin is a super supplement, so I was happy to see it in this formula. If it wasn’t in it, I’d question its purpose! My research has led me to believe that it will be well absorbed and that you will definitely see benefits from taking it!

Ginger is an oil I take on a regular basis to help with my digestion. Ginger is so calming and soothing to our gut, BUT it’s also an awesome anti-inflammatory! Taken from the rhizome (the subterranean stalk of a plant that shoots out the root system), Ginger has many traditional uses. A featured ingredient in many Asian dishes, Ginger has a hot, fragrant flavor when used as a kitchen spice. In Western tradition, Ginger is most often used in sweets—gingerbread and ginger snaps being two examples. Studies have been conducted on Ginger for its positive effect on joint health; however, Ginger is best known as an effective digestive aid and for helping to ease indigestion and nausea. As a powerful tonic for the entire digestive system, Ginger can lessen motion sickness, soothe an upset stomach, and help digest food after a large meal.

My final thought Anytime you can get ginger in your diet I believe it’s a good thing. Not only will this oil help aid your immune system, but it will also help to calm down your digestive system!

According to the Body Ecology diet, “Researchers at the University of Michigan discovered that green tea contains a compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG for short). EGCG inhibits the production of the molecules that contribute to inflammation and joint damage in people with rheumatoid arthritis.3 The EGCG in green tea suppresses inflammation in the connective tissue of arthritis sufferers too.4″ (Read more: Joint Pain? In an article from ABC News, there was a study published that showed green tea actually can help block the enzymes that cause cartilage damage! The study was done on rheumatoid arthritis patients and found some really great findings! The EGCG compound helped block the production of the cartilage destroying cells and also helped block pro-inflammatory cells! They concluded that it was too early to say that drinking green tea could help get rid of or cure RA, but it wouldn’t hurt – right? (Read more about the study here: Green Tea May Erase RA)

My final thought Hell to the yeah. Bring me all the green tea in the world!

pomegranate(1)Pomegranate –

Dr. Mercola (one of my favs!) wrote about a study in this article posted on his blog:

Pomegranate Extract May Reduce Arthritis Symptoms

Published in the Israeli Medical Association Journal, the pilot study included eight patients who were given 10 ml of pomegranate extract per day for 12 weeks. The participants’ joint status and serum oxidative status were assessed at the beginning and end of the study. The results showed that the extract:

  • Reduced the composite Disease Activity Index (DAS28) of arthritis by 17 percent
  • Reduced the tender joint count by 62 percent
  • Significantly reduced serum oxidative status, indicating a reduction in the inflammatory response

The authors concluded that: “Dietary supplementation with pomegranates may be a useful complementary strategy to attenuate clinical symptoms in RA patients.”

Later on in the article, he also state’s a great point saying that, “Free radicals are also a key component of chronic inflammation and related ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis.” (Pomegranate Extract May Reduce Arthritis Symptoms)

My final thought The polyphenols and the antioxidants certainly can’t hurt and I’m guessing they’d definitely help! That being said, Dr. Mercola gives a good point about the fructose that’s in the pomegranate juice and to be careful not to have too much. I guess that means the Pomegranate Chip Coconut Milk ice Cream I had early wasn’t doing anything for my joints 😉

grape_seed_extractGrape Seed –

To be completely honest, I wasn’t as familiar with grape seed helping joint health? When I first read the ingredient I thought perhaps it was added because of the resveratrol, but then I saw that listed as its own ingredient! The following are a few citations of interesting facts I learned about grape seed!

“…thanks to their remarkably strong antioxidant properties, grape seeds might (at least in theory) help fight certain skin conditions – such as inflammatory acne, psoriasis, and premature wrinkling of the skin – and some more serious health complications such as asthma, joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis patients, and problems related to eye health.” (Health Benefits of Eating Whole Grape Seeds)

“Grape seed extract (GSE) is one of nature’s most versatile nutrients, acting as a collagen, artery, and heart strengthener, while providing potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity…Think of a strand of collagen like a triple-stranded ski tow rope. The strands are held together with linking structures that are dependent on vitamin C and the amino acid lysine. Under stress and wear and tear, these collagen strands can unravel, leading to a loss of collagen elasticity and functional integrity (meaning aging). GSE has a unique ability to directly act as a collagen-bonding nutrient, thereby improving the strength and flexibility of collagen.” (Grape See Extract Improves Collagen Flexibility & Strength)

“The literature on rheumatoid arthritis and grape seed extract may just be gathering steam. A new study published in PLoS ONE explored the effect of grape seed proanthocyanid extract on bone damage and chronic inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Investigators examined the impact of grape seed extract both on cells from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and in mice with the disease. They discovered that grape seed extract:

  • Relieved symptoms associated with cartilage and bone damage in the mice
  • Stopped osteoclastogenesis and provided antioxidant benefits in the cells from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoclastogenesis is a process by which bone cells (osteoclasts) break down and destroy bone

Thus the bottom line of this study was that grape seed extract “may be beneficial for the treatment of inflammation-associated bone destruction.” (Grape Seed Extract For RA?)

My final thought  I personally don’t know enough to say one way or another, but the research out there seems to suggest that it’s definitely a great option for those with inflammatory diseases!

Resveratrol –

According to Dr. Mercola, “Resveratrol stops inflammation with a one-two punch that prevents your body from creating two different molecules known to trigger inflammation — sphingosine kinase and phospholipase D.” (The Secrets of Resveratrol) While upping our resveratrol isn’t the ONLY way to eliminate inflammation, it is a great supplement to take to help combat the inflammation in our body. I don’t need to tell you that within chronic illness there is a TON of inflammation, so this ingredient is definitely key for a joint formula.

My final thought – Every chronic illness or autoimmune patient should be taking resveratrol along with their omega 3’s daily.

DigestZen_15mlTummy Tamer Blend (ginger, peppermint, caraway) –

DigestZen is known as dōTERRA’s “tummy tamer” blend due to its ability to aid in digestion, soothe stomach upset, and maintain overall digestive health. This unique blend contains Ginger, Fennel, and Coriander to help ease stomach discomfort, including motion sickness and indigestion, while Peppermint, Tarragon, Anise, and Caraway aid with digestion and help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract. My final thought – I’m obsessed with gut health and truly think it’s something that we ALL need to focus on. I give it 2 thumbs way up for having these ingredients in this supplement.


All the ingredients in this product are derived from non-GMO plants. Likewise, all Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex ingredients are gluten-free. These are 2 things I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS look for when taking supplements. Most of the time, supplements contain fillers and extra ingredients that more than likely are negating all the positive benefits we’re getting from taking the supplement. It’s important to make sure you’re getting quality ingredients – or else you’re really just wasting your time and money.

So, after all of that, what do I think?

I think that some people will have really great results taking this! And I think some people won’t see a lot of difference from taking this!

Why do I say that?

Because EVERY BODY IS DIFFERENT! There isn’t a magic pill that works for everyone. That being said, after breaking down the ingredients and examining why things are in this product – I think there’s a high probability that most will see major benefits from this supplement.

There are supplements I think are a waste of money and there are supplements that I think are definitely worth trying. THIS, my friends, is one of the supplements I truly believe is worth trying!

    • I wish I knew the answer, but I honestly am not sure and don’t feel comfortable saying either way! I would assume yes, but don’t take my word for it!
